Tips for Shopping Online

Online shopping is easy, convenient, and there are some many options for finding unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that you may not be able to find in your town or city.
I haven't done a whole lot of shopping online (although I have done my fair share of 'window shopping' online!), but almost everything I've purchased from the internet has been successful.
I put together a few tips that I like to follow before making the commitment of buying whenever I find myself clicking around different online shops.

Check shipping rates
When shopping online, there’s nothing quite as bad as finding something you love and then finding out that shipping will cost almost as much as the item.
Fortunately, nowadays, most online shops have reasonable shipping rates to most places in the world – but it’s always good to double check so you don’t have any surprises when it comes time to pull out your credit card!

Research the shop’s return/exchange policy
Much the same with shipping, it’s important to know the site’s return or exchange policy.
Because you can’t try on a garment before purchasing, I always look to see if sites at least have a good exchange policy – just in case.

Know your measurements and body type
     This is so important!
Shopping online obviously prevents you from being able to try on the clothing you see, so it’s important to know your measurements and your body type.
Generally, I will stick to shapes and styles that I know already suit my body, and save new shapes and trends for my trip to the mall.
Sites like ASOS offer a very handy tool that allows you to enter the measurement from a garment you already own, and then compare those measurements to the piece you’re considering purchasing.

Know your fabrics
When I shop in person, I touch everything.
I want to know how the fabric feels before I even try a garment on.
Fabric can make or break a purchase for me, which is why I find it important to know which fabrics I can live with, and which ones I avoid. For example, I love cotton, but I don't really like viscose.
Check your closet and see which fabrics crop up most in your wardrobe, then when you’re shopping online, you’ll have a good idea of what to look for, and what to stay away from.

When in doubt, check reviews
I love sites that allow buyer reviews and photos.
It really helps to hear people’s honest feedback on how a garment worked out for them, and it’s even better to see a photo of everyday people wearing the items you see online.
If I’m unsure of whether or not I want to purchase something online, I always check for buyer reviews – especially if I’m unsure of how a garment will fit my body type.
Modcloth is my favourite site for buyer reviews and photos.

I hope you find these tips helpful in your online shopping quests! If you have any tips to add, leave a comment - I would love your advice!
